EN For the first time, an opera by George Frideric Handel is part of the programme of the Rencontres Musicales de la Vallée de l'Alzette. In the staged performance by the Prague puppet theatre Buchty a Loutky and the vocal and instrumental ensemble Collegium Marianum under the direction of Jana Semerádová, the 23rd edition of the Early Music Festival experiences a magnificent feast for the eyes and ears.
George Frideric Handel's Acis and Galatea was the pinnacle of pastoral opera in England. Written as a courtly entertainment about the simplicity of country life, Acis and Galatea contains a considerable amount of wit and self-parody. The supporting characters, Polyphemus and Damon, provide ample humour without detracting from the pathos of the tragedy of the main characters, Acis and Galatea.
